I help software teams get more out of the systems they already have.

Independent application architect. Architecture and code-quality reviews, legacy modernisation, and AI-assisted delivery that is practical about cost. Twenty years across investment banking, legal tech and property software.

Available from January 2027 for project work or a longer-term remote contract.

Based in Cape Town (UTC+2), working remotely with teams in the UK, Europe and beyond.

Legacy applicationNew platform

What I do

  • Architecture and code-quality reviews

For when the codebase feels like it is slowing you down and you want an independent view of where and why. I review architecture, code, performance and delivery practices, then give you written findings ranked by impact and effort and walk your team through them.

Typically a fixed-scope review of one to three weeks.

  • Legacy modernisation

For when a business-critical application is stuck on VB.NET, WebForms, AngularJS or Crystal Reports. I modernise module by module, using AI-assisted tooling to extract requirements from the existing code, so the business keeps running while the platform moves forward.

Usually starts with a pilot module to prove the approach and the numbers.

  • AI-assisted delivery set-up

For when developers use Copilot, Claude or Cursor ad hoc and you want a repeatable process. I set up workflows, standards and guardrails across requirements, implementation, testing and documentation, keeping token costs under control.

Includes hands-on sessions with your team.

About

Melanie Luck

I'm an application architect with 20 years in software, starting in London's investment banks at Jefferies and Credit Suisse, then as an architect at LexisNexis and leading a distributed engineering team at MRI Software. I'm hands-on: I still read the code, profile the slow query and write the pipeline. Now I work independently, helping teams modernise and get real value from AI-assisted development.
